Zambia, South Africa and Lesotho seeded for COSAFA Under-20

The 2018 COSAFA Under-20 Championships
will be held in Kitwe, Zambia in December...

Hosts Zambia, defending champions South Africa and last years’ runners-up Lesotho will be the three seeded sides in Wednesday’s pool stage draw for the 2018 Mopani Copper Mines COSAFA Under-20 Championships.

The draw will be held in the host city of Kitwe, Zambia ahead of the tournament set for December 2 to 14.

The three seeded sides will head pools A, B and C with Zambia claiming position A1 in Group A, South Africa taking B1 in Group B and Lesotho penned in for C1 in Group C.

The remaining nine sides will be placed in two pots based on their ranking according to their performance at last year’s COSAFA Under-20 Championships.

Malawi, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Swaziland will be placed in Pot 1, with Mozambique, Mauritius, Angola, Botswana and newcomers Reunion in Pot 2.

Each group will have four nations with only the top team in each pool and the best-placed runner-up set to advance to the semi-finals.

The winner of Group B will take on the best-placed runner-up in the semi-finals, while the top two sides in Groups A and C will face-off in the knockout stage.

The format is the same as last year, when East African guest nation Uganda topped Group A. South Africa won Group B while the Makoanyane XI were the winners of Group C. North African guest nation Egypt advanced from Group B as the best-placed runner-up with six points before falling to Amajita in the semis while Lesotho overcame Uganda.

LDF Ladies open three-point lead, Kick4Life edge Stoko to keep title hopes alive

Kick4Life kept their title hopes alive with a 2-1 win over Stoko...
LDF Ladies have opened a three-point gap at the top of the Women’s Super League after another winning weekend for the defending champions.

LDF beat Basetsana 4-0 on Saturday at Setsoto Stadium to claim their fourth successive win of the 2018/19 season with the in-form duo of Kholu Lebakeng and Phuzile Molefe again on the scoresheet.

Nkhasi Lehloenya’s team are still to concede a goal this term and have scored an eye-watering 21 goals in four games.

With 12 points, LDF are now three points clear at the top after second-placed Stoko suffered their first defeat of the season in a 2-1 reverse to Kick4Life at Setsoto on Sunday.

As expected, Stoko versus Kick4Life was an evenly contested tie between two title contenders and sides went into the break tied after a tight first half.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 64th minute by Kick4Life’s Relebohile Akhente only for Stoko to strike back a minute later.

However, it was last season’s runners up Kick4Life who had the last laugh when Akhente struck the winner against her former team in the 84th minute. It was a crucial goal as the win keeps Kick4Life’s title hopes alive after a defeat to rivals LDF earlier in the month.

Stoko (second) and Kick4Life (third) both have nine points from four games with 2016 champions Stoko ahead on goal difference.

The other two games at the weekend were played on Saturday at Assumption High School in Teyateyaneng and both ended in draws.

In the day’s first match, Rovers and Mafeteng Sistas played to a 1-1, a result which kept the sides fifth and sixth in the league respectively.

The league’s bottom two sides, Berea Ladies and Sky Battalion, also couldn’t be separated as their clash ended goalless in the day’s second game.

Lioli crowned 2018 Top 4 Independence Cup champions

Lioli are the Top Indepedence Cup champions for 2018...

Lioli have been crowned 2018 Top 4 Independence Cup champions after a pulsating 2-1 win over Bantu in Sunday’s final at Setsoto Stadium.

Lioli’s heroes on the day were Cameroonian striker Swithbert Kum Bin and captain Mafa Moremoholo whose goals before halftime put Tse Nala on the way to a memorable win.

The win is Lioli’s sixth Independence Cup triumph in club history and brings Tse Nala level with Matlama. Only Bantu, with seven, have more Top 4 titles than the Teyateyaneng giants.

Tse Nala came into Sunday’s final on a high after an impressive 2-0 win over Matlama in Saturday’s semi-finals and their confidence showed early.

Lehlohonolo Thotanyana’s charges were the more purposeful side as Bantu struggled to gain a foothold in the game.

Lioli’s left-wing combination Tumelo Makha and Diutlwileng Molefe, in particular, was causing Bantu all sorts of problems.

Another top performer for Lioli was Lekhanya Lekhanya and his superb cross in the 33rd minute found Kum to give Tse Nala a deserved lead. Five minutes later Moremoholo made it 2-0 with his second goal against Bantu in as many games after scoring the winner in a league encounter last month.

Bantu, looking to defend the crown the won last year, woke up in the second half.

They pressed Lioli back and were finally rewarded in the 83rd minute when substitute Hlompho Kalake scored from the penalty spot. But it was too little, too late as Lioli held on to give Thotanyana his first trophy since returning to Tse Nala in July.

Earlier in the day LDF took bronze after beating Matlama 4-3 in a thrilling third-place playoff.

However, the day belonged to Lioli who avenged painful Independence Cup final defeats to Bantu in the 2015 and 2013.

“We are very happy as players because we worked hard all week,” Lioli captain Mafa Moremoholo said afterwards.

“Because we beat them in the league (last month) we knew (Bantu) would come out strongly but we told ourselves after yesterday’s win (over Matlama) that, no matter what, we were going to win this game.”

“They came with a different approach in the second half. They threw everything forward because they were desperate to score a goal and for us it was just important that we should remain organised so that we don’t concede.”

Fellow goalscoring hero Kum said last month’s 1-0 league win over Bantu gave Lioli confidence despite previous cup disappointments against A Matšo Matebele.

“Based on history it’s true that Bantu had the upper hand over Lioli, but I think that was then, this is a new team I can say, and I am new into the team,” Kum said.

“Just the fact that we had the upper hand over them last time, I was very confident that we were going to come out victorious.”

In the end, Kum – who joined Lioli in August – was delighted Tse Nala held on for his first trophy in Lesotho football.

“I think that’s the game of football, sometimes you press, sometimes it’s against us you,” Kum said.

“But I think the most important thing is victory and I’m so glad we have the victory today.”
