The chairman of the South African Football Association (Safa) Kirsten Nematandani has said his country is ready to take over from Libya in hosting the tournament.
Last week Caf stripped Libya of its host status because of the chaos in the North African country.
“In any case, the World Cup 2010 has left a massive legacy in terms of infrastructure and it was a question of agreeing to host or not. We discussed the issue of the cost factor involved in hosting the event and also we sought assurance from Caf that we did not have to go into bidding with anyone to host the event,” Nematandani said.
It is now up to Caf to decide whether the competition will be hosted in South Africa or Ghana – the other option on the table.
If Caf does confirm South Africa as the tournament’s hosts Amajita will automatically replace Libya in Group A alongside the Makoanyane XI, Egypt and Mali.
The Makoanyane XI have enjoyed the upper hand over their South African counterparts recently. Lesotho beat South Africa en route to qualifying for the African Youth Championship. The Makoanyane XI also beat Amajita at the Eduardo dos Santos International tournament in Angola last August before a 2-1 win in the group stage of the Metropolitan Cosafa Under-20 Youth Championships in December.
