points from the weekend’s Vodacom Premier League action…
Are
Matlama really contenders?
Matlama showed they might really be contenders
for the league title with a 3-1 win over Sandawana yesterday. Tse Putsoa started
the season with a discouraging 0-0 draw home with newly-promoted Rovers but
since then Matlama have won two games in a row including yesterday’s win.
Matlama looked good against Sandawana and the win has lifted the nine-time
champions to second place.
LDF
start slow
LDF played to another draw yesterday. This
time it was a goalless stalemate with Likhopo. It is Sohle-Sohle’s third draw
in as many games and, again, it was very uninspiring. It is not the best start
for a team that wants to be competing for the league title. LDF haven’t won the
title since 2004. So far the Ratjomose side has started showing the same ills
that have held them back over the past five years, namely a lack of creativity
and goals. Things have to change fast if LDF are to end their championship
drought, as they hope.
Lebajoa
Mphongoa may be under pressure, already
It is only three games into the season but
there is already an air of dejection in Hlotse. Lebajoa Mphongoa, a former Linare
favourite who went on to have success with LDF and Likuena, took over at the
start of the season amid a lot of hope. However, the bubble has burst fast.
Linare have lost three games from three and prop up the table. Linare’s latest
loss was a 1-0 loss to LCS on Saturday. Tse Tala have only scored two goals and
conceded seven in three games.
Elsewhere…
Lioli remain top of the league after a
1-0 win over LMPS on Saturday at PTC grounds. Tse Nala are in the midst of an unprecedented
run of domination. It is almost a year since Lioli tasted defeat in the league.
Lioli have not lost a league game since losing 2-0 to Matlama on October 19,
2014, a run of 21 matches. Of those 21 matches, Lioli have won 16.
On Sunday, Bantu, Lioli’s main rivals
for the past three seasons, got off the mark with a 2-0 win over Likila United.
The win was Katiso Mojakhomo’s first in charge of Bantu and relieved pressure.
The third placed team after three games is Rovers. The new boys from Roma continued
their surprising start with a 1-0 win Kick4Life on Saturday.
