| Happy times are back in Mafeteng |
Bantu
are happy again
It was a good weekend for Bantu. A Matšo Matebele made it back-to-back
wins with a hard-fought 1-0 over a plucky Mphatlalatsane side at the Leshoboro
Seeiso Sports Complex on Saturday. Mphatlalatsane have been a tough nut to
crack for Bantu in recent seasons. In April they ended Bantu’s titles hopes
with a 1-1 draw in Mafeteng on the penultimate weekend of the season.
Mphatlalatsane once again made things difficult for Bantu on Saturday but this
time A Matšo Matebele secured the win
thanks to Nzenze Nkulu’s 75th minute strike.
Back-to-back wins mean the mood will be much
happier in Mafeteng this week after Bantu began winless in their first two
games of the season. The start raised the pressure on new coach Katiso
Mojakhomo but he can breathe a bit easier. Saturday’s win has also brought
Bantu within three points of the top after Lioli were held to a goalless draw
by LDF yesterday.
LCS also claimed their second win in a
row with a 2-1 victory over LMPS yesterday. Like Bantu, the wins have eased the
pressure on their new coach Mpitsa Marai. And, like Bantu, Masheshena are three points behind Lioli.
Bantu and LCS, Lioli’s main challengers for
the title, are back within touching distance of the champions, just where they
want to be.
Likhopo
shoot up to second, Likila flounder
Likhopo’s 3-0 win over Likila United on
Saturday was the second time they have scored three goals in a match this
season. The Red Army beat Linare 4-1 on the opening day of the season. The thumping
of Likila has moved Likhopo up to second place in the league, a much better
start than season when they lost two of their opening four matches.
Likhopo remain inconsistent, as
illustrated by the fact their other two games have ended goalless. But Likhopo
are clearly wiser and sturdier this season and they could have a say in the top
four race.
On the other hand, Saturday’s loss dropped
Likila to the bottom of the league. The Butha-Buthe side were the surprise
package last season in what was their debut premiership campaign. However,
teams are figuring them out. Likila are the only side not to have scored this
season and they have conceded five goals. Likila do have a game in hand because
an earlier game against Mphatlalatsane was postponed, but they have looked
short of ideas in their three games so far.

| Linare are also feeling better this week |
In what was the game of the weekend, Linare
moved off the bottom of the league with a 3-1 over their great rivals Matlama
on Saturday. The meeting of the teams from Lesotho’s two biggest cities, Maseru
and Hlotse, was once the biggest in the country. In the late seventies and
early eighties Linare and Matlama were the leading lights in the land and they
shared five league titles between 1977 and 1982.
Their meeting has fallen from those
heights in recent decades. Linare haven’t won a trophy since 1999 and they
started this season with three losses from their first three games. However, in
an entertaining clash in Maputsoe, Linare confounded the form-book to hand
Matlama their first loss of the season. Tse Tala are off the foot of the league
table and, who knows, a win over Matlama could ignite their campaign. It
certainly ignited late night parties in Hlotse on Saturday.
