Sundawana’s Spanish coach makes debut

Antonio Gonzalez Flores, right, in Uganda
Spain’s Antonio Gonzalez Flores will take charge of his first game as Sundawana coach on Sunday when Tse Bo Yellow face Likhopo at the LCS Stadium.

Flores arrived in the country last Thursday and took charge of his first training session on Tuesday.

He has become the only overseas coach in Lesotho’s top-flight. The only other foreign coach in the Vodacom Premier League is Bantu’s James Madidilane of South Africa.

The ambitious Butha-Buthe club are owned by famous traditional healer Thato “Sandawana” Nkone and they said money is not an issue when it comes to paying for Flores’ services.

“My boss (Nkone) loves football and wants to change the level of football in the country,” said Sundawana’s acting communications and marketing manager, Lekena Mohale. “He wants to see his team improving and reaching a high level in terms of football in the country.

Flores has replaced Lehlohonolo “Freeze” Ntene who has shifted to assistant coach.

Flores’ only previous experience in African football came in Uganda where he was appointed as coach of Ugandan Premier League side Sports Club Villa ahead of the 2015/16 season. However, the Spaniard only last seven games before returning home.

Nonetheless, Mohale said it would not be difficult for Flores to adapt to Sundawana because he will be working closely with Ntene.

The Spaniard takes over with Tse Bo Yellow finally finding the form that got them their surprise top four place last season. Sundawana are silently one of the form teams in the Vodacom Premier League at the moment.

Apart from the bad luck of running into the freight train that is Kick4Life, Sundawana have lost just once in the last 11 league games. Their 2-1 win over Linare last Sunday was their fourth in the five games.

Their run of form has Sundawana (25 points from 17 games) just three points adrift of fourth-placed LCS though Masheshena have played a game less.

On Sunday, Sundawana face a Likhopo side fighting for their Vodacom Premier League lives. Nevertheless, the last time the sides met in October, Sundawana ran out comfortable 2-0 winners. Another three points would be the perfect start to life under Flores.
