The 2018/19 Women’s Super League starts with a goal fest

The 2018/19 Women’s Super League season got underway on Saturday and it started with a bang.

Defending champions LDF Ladies began their title defence in impressive fashion as they thumped Mafeteng Sisters 4-0 while last year’s runners up Kick4Life secured a tougher than expected 3-2 win over Basetsana.

The matches were part of a goal-filled opening weekend which gave fans value for their money.

A total of 21 goals were scored in Saturday’s four games and Women’s Super League chairman Chris Bullock was pleased with the entertainment on offer and the league’s decision to host the fixtures as double headers – a new innovation introduced this season.

“Everything went well and the format worked well,” Bullock said.

“The standard of the league continues to improve,” he added. “We saw Rovers and Stoko both win 6-0 which hopefully shows there are more teams to push the likes of LDF and Kick4Life this year.”

“Mafeteng were very competitive especially in the first half against LDF using a lot of young players while Basetsana gave Kick4Life a good game only losing 3-2,” Bullock said.

Previous Women’s Super League champions:
2015: Likhosatsana
2016: Stoko
2017: LDF Ladies

The first match of the 2018/19 season saw Rovers beat Berea 6-0 on Saturday morning at the Maputsoe DiFA Stadium while, in the second match of the double header, 2016 champions Stoko also notched a 6-0 win against Sky Battalion.

The day’s second double header was held at Kick4Life in Maseru.

The first game and LDF ran out 4-0 winners over a youthful Mafeteng Sisters side.

Fittingly, the game of the opening weekend turned out to be Saturday’s last game as hosts Kick4Life beat Basetsana 3-2.

Bullock said the competitive start is hopefully a sign of a competitive season which, in turn, would help Lesotho’s national women’s teams.

“(The opening weekend games) point to a competitive year this year,” Bullock said.

“Hopefully with some teams introducing a lot of new young players that can help with the aim of helping to develop players which can then help provide more options for our national teams.”

Women’s Super League opening weekend results:
Rovers 6-0 Berea
LDF 4-0 Mafeteng Sisters
Stoko 6-0 Sky Battalion
Kick4Life 3-2 Basetsana
