Lesotho finishes year 141st in the world

Progress... Jane Thaba-Ntšo and Likuena end 2016 43rd in Africa
Lesotho will end the year as 43rd best team in Africa and 141st worldwide after the latest FIFA World Rankings were released on Thursday. Likuena have moved up one place in the rankings

Overall, 2016 has seen Lesotho move from 152nd in January to its current ranking at the end of the year. Likuena, however, are set to be inactive for a few months.

At the moment, Lesotho’s next assignment will only be in April when 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers begin.

In the rest of the rankings, Senegal ended 2016 as Africa’s highest ranked team edging out reigning African champions Ivory Coast to top spot.

Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Ghana and Morocco complete the latest top 10 released by FIFA.

All of the countries in the top 10, except for Nigeria, will be among the 16 challengers for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in Gabon between January 14 and February 5.

Meanwhile, Argentina will end the year on top of the world ahead of neighbours Brazil. Argentina, beaten finalists in the Copa America in June, therefore, has taken the ‘Team of the Year’ title from Belgium who they overtook at the summit in April this year. In all, Argentina won ten of their 15 games in 2016, losing three and drawing twice.

The regional shaping of the ranking’s top 50 has taken on a different slant compared to this time last year. Asia has increased its standing with four teams now in the top 50, three more than last year.

Europe has 28 (minus one from last year), Africa has seven (minus one), and CONCACAF has three (minus one). South America retains its standing as the world’s proportional heavyweights with 80 per cent of CONMEBOL teams in the top 50. There are eight South American teams in the top 50, the same number as in December last year.

Lesotho up four spots in FIFA Rankings

Lesotho has moved up FIFA's rankings
Lesotho has moved up four spots on the FIFA rankings after a positive COSAFA Castle Cup in Namibia last month where Likuena reached the quarterfinals. Lesotho is up to 151st in the world in the latest FIFA rankings, 46th in Africa.

Likuena won three games at the tournament beating Mauritius, Angola and Malawi in the group stage before losing to South Africa in the quarterfinals.

So far Lesotho has only one match remaining in 2016, the side’s final 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Algeria on September 2 in Algiers.

To transfer news and Vodacom Premier League side LCS have reportedly made an offer for Likuena and Bantu midfielder Sepiriti Malefane. Malefane has been at the Mafeteng giants for the last two seasons but he has been training with Masheshena since the start of pre-season two weeks ago.

Malefane would fill many needs for LCS. He can play anywhere in defence and can also operate in midfield. He is also a young talent, a stated requirement by LCS as the club seeks to re-build a squad that can challenge for the league title.

Another Bantu player that may be prized away from Mafeteng is midfielder Hlompho Kalake who remains strongly linked with a move to Matlama. Tse Putsoa want to add the Lesotho international to bolster their squad and as a back-up plan in case Phafa Tšosane moves to LMPS.

Staying with Bantu, the club hosted a successful gala dinner on Saturday evening at Avani Maseru Hotel. The event was graced by Muvhango actor Sindi Dlathu who stars as Thandaza, Dingaan Mokebe (who is James Motsamai) and Palo Mokoailane who plays Pheko Mokoena.

Lesedi FM radio presenter Nyakallo Leine, who is popularly known as Ba2cada, also attended the glitzy show.

Likuena up 5 places in FIFA Rankings

Round of applause for Likuena
Lesotho has moved up five places to 148th in the world in the latest FIFA rankings. The rankings were updated today.

A total of 171 matches were taken into account for the April edition of the FIFA rankings. They include 51 qualifiers for 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, 60 continental qualifiers and 60 international friendlies.

Likuena move up after claiming a 2-1 win over Seychelles in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier two weeks ago. Lesotho also lost 2-0 to Seychelles in the month of March.

The new FIFA world rankings see Argentina take over from Belgium at the top. World champions Germany, meanwhile, have slipped down to fifth while Copa America winners Chile have moved up to third, the highest they have ever been in the FIFA standings.

The highest-placed African team is Algeria in 33rd place, one ahead of African champions Ivory Coast.

The other big news in the rankings for Africa is three-times continental champions Nigeria dropping down to 67th in the world, 14th in Africa, after failing to qualify for next year’s AFCON.

As things stand, Lesotho’s next assignment is a 2017 AFCON qualifier against Ethiopia on June 5. The following week the 2016 COSAFA Cup begins in Namibia.

Likuena’s remaining assignments for 2016:
June 5 – Lesotho v Ethiopia (2017 AFCON)
June 11-25 – COSAFA Cup (Namibia)
September 2 – Algeria v Lesotho (2017 AFCON)

FIFA Rankings: Lesotho 153 in the world, Cape Verde top in Africa

Likuena in free-fall
Lesotho has dropped to 153rd the world in the latest FIFA rankings released today. The past 12 months have seen a free-fall for Lesotho which reached its highest ever FIFA ranking of 105 in August 2014.

Likuena’s form has dropped since then and they won only one of their 16 international games played in 2015.

Lesotho’s next fixture is a 2017 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the Seychelles away from home on Saturday, March 26.

Likuena will host Seychelles three days later. The match will be played on Tuesday, March 29 at Setsoto Stadium and will kick-off at 15:00, the Lesotho Football Association has confirmed.

Lesotho is currently bottom of Group J of the 2017 AFCON qualifiers, a group that also consists of leaders Algeria, Ethiopia and the Seychelles.

In other rankings news, the Cape Verde Islands have ascended to the top of the African rankings for the first time. The island nation with a population of roughly 500 000 is ranked 31st in the world. It is a remarkable achievement. They are ahead of reigning African champions Ivory Coast, who are 36th in the world, and Algeria, ranked 37th by FIFA.

Cameroon also returned to the top 10 in Africa at the expense of Guinea.
