The Prize... The CAF Champions League trophy |
The draw for the
2016 CAF Champions League group stage is complete. The draw includes South African
champions Mamelodi Sundowns who were reinstated into the competition after the expulsion
of AS Vita Club of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
AS Vita
eliminated Sundowns from the Champions League on away goals last month after a
2-2 aggregate draw. However, AS Vita have been disqualified by CAF for fielding
an ineligible player, Idrissa Traore, in the second leg of the sides’ tie.
After Sundowns
lost to AS Vita they dropped down into the CAF Confederation Cup where they
were also eliminated on away goals by Ghana’s Medeama SC. But, the Brazilians
have been given a second chance in Africa.
Sundowns have
been drawn in a tough Group B alongside three former winners of the Champions
League: Enyimba of Nigeria, Egypt’s Zamalek and ES Setif of Algeria.
Group A
meanwhile will see Zambia’s Zesco United, Egyptian giants Al Ahly, Ivory Coast’s
ASEC Mimosas and Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco battle it out.
