Horse racing fun set for Mokhotlong... |
The Mokhotlong business
community has organised horse racing games scheduled for March 18 at the
Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security race tracks.
The event hopes
to attract jockeys from around the district and is sponsored by local Mokhotlong
businessman Makoanyane Letsie to the tune of M11 000.
Letsie said
the motivation behind sponsoring the race-day is to revive horse racing because
it is an indigenous sport that unites Basotho.
Letsie said a
lack of sponsorship for such native pastimes has contributed to their gradual
disappearance and he said next month’s event aims to help reverse the situation.
He said final
preparations for the race are underway after it was postponed on several
occasions due to heavy rains.
“Horse racing
is among the sporting codes which are admired by people in Mokhotlong and Lesotho,”
Letsie said. “Just by keeping an ordinary horse, a Mosotho man can feed his
family or even pay fees for children by just participating in such games.”
