Lesotho has been invited to take part in
the two-day Kwesé Sports Victoria Falls Sevens international tournament later
this month.
The competition will be held at Victoria Falls Primary School in Zimbabwe on March 18 and 19 and Lesotho has
been asked to send both a men’s and women’s team to the tournament.
The men’s sevens team will be selected
from the national team Likoatola while
the women’s team will be made up mostly of the Maseru Select rugby club. Both
teams have started training and preparing, however, Federation of Lesotho Rugby
(FLR) general secretary Litšitso Motšeremeli said the association is still
struggling to secure transport to go to Zimbabwe.
“We are ready to attend this tournament
if the transport issue could be solved,” Motšeremeli said. “We do not want to
miss this chance because it would be a yard stick to measure our strengths and
weaknesses.”
Motšeremeli said the Kwesé Sevens tournament
will be Lesotho’s first steps towards its attempts to qualify for 2018 Rugby
World Cup Sevens which will be held in the United States of America.
“The tournament is going to help us
weigh our sevens teams and will also boost our teams with international
exposure,” he added.
The Kwesé Sevens would also be part of
Lesotho’s preparations for the Rugby Africa South 1D tournament in October. The
15-a-side competition will be held in Mafeteng and Likoatola will take on Malawi and Swaziland with the winner gaining
promotion to Rugby Africa’s 1C tier next year.
