The Women's Super League is back... The action gets underway on Saturday |
The 2018/19 Women’s Super League season roars
into life on Saturday.
This season will mark the first in which
the country’s women’s top-flight is being played across two calendar years thanks
to a change made to CAF’s women’s football calendar last year.
The amendment means the Women’s Super
League will now run from September until around March next year.
Before this season the first three
editions of the league were played over one calendar year with Likhosatsana winning the inaugural title in 2015 before wins for Stoko in 2016 and LDF
Ladies last year.
Another change this season will see two
venues each host a double-header of games every weekend with the eight league clubs
alternating as hosts each week.
In this weekend’s opening games the Maputsoe
DiFA Stadium will host Rovers and Berea Ladies at 11:00 followed by Stoko versus
Sky Battalion at 13:00.
At the same time, Kick4Life will host
clashes between reigning champions LDF Ladies and Mafeteng Sisters at 12:00 before
last year’s runners up Kick4Life open their season against Basetsana at 14:00.
According to league organisers, this
season will also see women empowerment activities held at various games over
the course of the season.
Once again the favourites for the
Women’s Super League title are LDF Ladies and Kick4Life.
LDF were the dominant side last season winning
both the league and season-ending Top 4 titles. Kick4Life, on the other hand,
have been bridesmaids for the past three seasons finishing behind Basetsana,
Stoko and LDF in successive years.
However, Kick4Life won this season’s
curtain-raising Women’s
Super League Tournament in July, beating LDF 1-0 in the final.
