A day of goals as Matlama go top of Econet Premier League

Goal-hunter... striker Motebang Sera was on the scoresheet again for Matlama

It was raining goals in Sunday’s Econet Premier League action as Matlama, LCS, Linare and Liphakoe all claimed valuable wins.

The headline game of the day was the Maseru derby between Matlama and Likhopo at Setsoto Stadium.

Although Likhopo went into the clash on the back of a torrid run of just two wins in 15 league games, one of those wins came against Matlama when the sides met in February and matches between the Maseru brothers are usually hard-fought encounters.

That wasn’t the case this time, however, as Tse Putsoa completely dominated an outclassed Likhopo from start to finish.

Mabuti Potloane and Lebajoa Mosehlenyane put Matlama on the way to a win before Motebang Sera struck late to make it 3-0 and rub salt into Likhopo’s wounds. The win sends last season’s LNIG Top 8 champions to the top of the league on goal difference.

Earlier at Setsoto, in the first of a double header, LCS comfortably beat struggling Majantja 3-0 which briefly put Masheshena top before Matlama’s win.

As it is, Mpitsa Marai’s side are in second place behind Matlama and ahead of LMPS with the in-form Leboneng Moqecho getting amongst the goals again.

The day’s other two games were more dramatic.

At the Maputsoe DiFA Stadium, Linare and Swallows played to a five-goal thriller which saw visiting Maswai-swai take the lead within 10 minutes through Leduma Phosholi. Tse Tala struck back furiously, however, with goals from Billy Pulumo, Rethabile Selonyane and Masilo Nena giving the hosts a 3-1 halftime lead.

That wasn’t the end of the story, though, as Retšelisitsoe Mopeli scored late on to make it a nervous final minutes for Linare.

In Quthing, Liphakoe claimed all three points against Galaxy in dramatic fashion as Tšepang Makapa scored in the 89th minute to finally breach the visitors’ resolute defence and seal a 1-0 win.

Liphakoe and Linare moved up to fifth and sixth in the Econet Premier League with their wins while Likhopo, Majantja and Galaxy are still searching for their first points of the season.

Sunday’s Results:
Matlama 3-0 Likhopo
LCS 3-0 Majantja
Linare 3-2 Swallows
Liphakoe 1-0 Galaxy
