Novak Djokovic the new world number One

Serbian superstar Novak Djokovic is tennis’ new world number one after he beat France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 in the Wimbledon semi-finals today.

Djokovic has had a remarkable 2011 losing just once, against Roger Federer in last month’s French Open semi-finals, in 47 matches.

In all Djokovic has won seven titles this year including the Australian Open in January and win or lose in Sunday’s Wimbledon final Nole will be the new world number one when the ATP rankings are released on Monday and will replace Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

In doing so Djokovic will become the first player other than Nadal or Federer to top the rankings since Andy Roddick did so way back in November 2004.

Djokovic’s latest triumph came after riding the normal rollercoaster that it is when playing the eternal crowd-pleaser Tsonga. Djokovic had taken a two set lead but Tsonga, who fought back from two sets down to beat six-time Wimbledon champion Federer in the quarterfinals, threatened to do the same again by winning the third set.

However Djokovic showed his mettle, holding his nerve to secure an early break of serve in the fourth set.  The Serbian then held on to secure victory to reach his first Wimbledon final and reach the summit of the game for the first time in his career.

“This is one of the best feelings I ever had on a tennis court and my dreams are coming true. Hopefully there are some more celebrations to come. I have been working all my life for this. I have been dreaming about playing finals at Wimbledon since I started playing when I was four,” Djokovic said after beating Tsonga.

Djokovic will now await the winner of the second semi-final between defending champion Nadal and Wimbledon home favourite Andy Murray.
