Cameroon will be part of the 2011 Fifa Under-20 World Cup in Colombia after their 1-0 win over Nigeria coupled with Ghana’s 1-1 draw with Gambia yesterday meant Cameroon could not finish any lower than second in Group B here at the Caf African Youth Championship.
The Young Indomitable Lions’ ticket to the world showpiece in July and August was booked their ticket with an unsurprisingly hard-fought win over West African rivals Nigeria in the first match at the Dobsonville Stadium yesterday.
Cameroon’s goal came late in the first half, striker Franck Ohandza using his body well to roll his marker before thumping a wonder goal into the top corner past Dani Danjuma in the Nigerian goal.
Nigeria’s throughout was an uninspiring one, lacking direction and imagination. It was a backwards step from their second half performance their 2-1 win over Ghana in the opening group game.
In the day’s second match it seemed for a while that defending champions, and world champions, Ghana would be crashing out of the tournament. Gambia was by far the better side in the first creating the better chances and playing the more attractive football. The Young Scorpions got their rewards early, striker Jammeh Baboucarr pinching a goal in the 22nd minute.
It seemed Gambia, even after going down to 10 men, would cling on for a famous win but two minutes from time Richmond Boakye headed in to give the Black Satellites from Ghana a desperate reprieve.
It all means second place and a ticket to the world cup in this the group of death will go down to the final round of group games. Nigeria, Ghana and Gambia can all still join Cameroon in the semi-finals.
